International Running Track Standards
Before you start building a running track facility, it is very important to understand the types of running tracks and their dimensions. Let's take a look at some dimensions and sizes of short-distance running courses.
400-meter Running Track Size
According to World Athletics, formerly known as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the international standard running track is oval-shaped with an overall length of 400 meters, and consists of eight tracks. The length of the track is about 176.91 meters with a width of 92.5 meters.
Each track is 1.22 meters to 1.25 meters wide as measured from the inside edge of the track. Within this running track there are also special areas such as the start area, finish area, and area for jumping and throwing competitions.
300 meter running track size
The 300-meter running track is becoming increasingly popular, especially in high schools. This track has several advantages over the 400-meter track, one of which is its smaller size. The 300-meter track only takes up about 20 percent less space than the 400-meter track.
Specifically, a 300-meter track is usually built when there is not enough space for a 400-meter track. The track has a lane width of 1.22 meters and is oval-shaped with a length of 129.16 meters and a width of 89.12 meters, requiring a total area of 10,305 square meters for construction.
200 Meter Running Track Size
The 200-meter running track is half of an oval track, which means that runners will start from the starting line that is at the back of one of the bends and run until they reach the finish line at the end of the next straight track.
100 Meter Running Track Size
The 100-meter running track is usually located on one of the straight sides of an oval track. The race starts from the starting line placed at one end of the straight track and ends at the finish line located 100 meters from the starting line.

Field Size and Additional Facilities
In addition to the running track, the athletic field is also equipped with various additional facilities to support other athletic competitions, such as:
Long jump and high jump fields
The long jump field usually consists of a 40-meter starting track that ends in a sandbox where athletes land. Meanwhile, the high jump field has a starting running area of about 15-25 meters, with poles and bars that can be adjusted in height according to the needs of the competition.
Discus throwing and javelin throwing fields
The discus throwing field has a throwing circle with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a conical landing area with an angle of 34.92 degrees. While the javelin throwing field consists of a 30-36.5 meter long starting track and a conical sector-shaped landing area with an angle of 28.96 degrees.
Shot put field
The shot put field has a throwing circle with a diameter of 2.135 meters and a conical sector landing area with an angle of 34.92 degrees. This circle is surrounded by a 1.5 meter high fence for safety.
Importance of Field Size Standards
Adhering to athletic field size standards is essential to ensure fairness and consistency in every competition. A uniform size allows every athlete to compete under the same conditions, without any advantage or disadvantage due to differences in track size.
Knowing the size of the short track and other facilities is very important, especially for athletes, coaches, and competition organizers. The size standards set by the international athletics federation ensure that every competition is fair and in accordance with the rules. Thus, athletes can focus on their best performance without worrying about field conditions that are not up to standard.
