There's a question we hear almost every time we recommend Junckers to a new client in Indonesia.

“Why would I buy wooden flooring from Denmark?”

It's a fair question.Indonesia is a country rich in timber. We have forests, we have craftsmen, we have local products at a fraction of the import price. So why fly a floor in from Copenhagen?

The Science Behind the Floor: What Press-Drying Actually Does

Most people think of flooring as a surface. Junckers engineers think of it as a performance system — and it starts at the molecular level.

Junckers invented a proprietary process called press-drying, used for their beech and maple sports floors. The process involves drying wet wood staves under pressure in a large heated press for approximately two hours at 170°C. This isn't conventional kiln-drying. The heat and mechanical pressure together fundamentally reorganise the internal structure of the wood.

The results are measurable and significant:

• Structural strength increases by 15% compared to conventionally dried wood
• Press-dried beech is approximately 30% stronger than oak — a species most people assume is the benchmark for hardwood quality
• Dimensional stability improves dramatically — the wood's natural tendency to expand and contract with humidity changes is engineered out, not masked
• Colour becomes warmer, more uniform, and the grain pattern more pronounced

Compare this to the conventional drying alternative: 10 to 12 days in a kiln, and you still don't achieve the same structural result. The press-drying process takes two hours and produces a fundamentally superior material.

This is what people miss when they compare Junckers to a local timber product by price per square metre. They are not the same category of material.

At the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Junckers Pro Complete 44 was deployed across every host venue in Manila, Okinawa, and Jakarta — totalling 3,700m² of floor. Datra was appointed by Junckers as their official partner in Indonesia for this installation.

At Indonesia Arena, Datra's scope extended far beyond the floor: 12,705 arena seats, 2,968 retractable telescopic seats, civil works, concrete levelling, and the FIBA-certified Junckers wooden basketball floor. The project was delivered on time, at international standard. When the FIBA inspection team arrived, they assessed the work as world-class quality.

President Joko Widodo visited the site personally during construction and tested the telescopic seating himself.

For Sports Halls: Performance That Protects Athletes

The reason professional sports organisations insist on certified hardwood flooring isn't aesthetic. It's physiological.

A Junckers floor certified to EN 14904 — the European standard for indoor sports floors — is tested for: Shock absorption, ball bounce consistency, surface friction, and resistance to deformation under load. The class A4 rating, which Junckers Pro Complete 44 carries, means the floor has been subjected to controlled dynamic impacts of approximately 300kg, applied no fewer than 100,000 times — the equivalent of 25 years of normal use.

For venues hosting serious competition, the performance parameters are non-negotiable. A friction rating below 80 makes a floor dangerously slippery. Above 110 creates injury risk from excessive grip. A Junckers floor lands precisely in the safe range and holds it.

For basketball specifically, the Pro Complete 44 and Arena Master systems carry FIBA Level 1 and Level 2 certification — the highest classifications for international competition.

What this means for a venue manager in Indonesia: If you host IBL matches, FIBA qualifiers, or any international-standard event, the floor is either certified or it isn't. There is no middle ground.

For Cultural Centers and Multi-Use Venues: The Floor That Does Everything

The most challenging client brief in sports infrastructure is the multi-use venue: a space that needs to host a regional basketball final on Friday, a corporate gala on Saturday, and a university graduation on Sunday.

The Tropical Climate Question — Answered Definitively

“But we're in Indonesia. Wood and humidity don't mix.”

This objection is understandable and almost always wrong — for one precise reason.

Junckers solid hardwood floors are rated for installation in humidity conditions ranging from 25% to 85% relative humidity. The critical specification is that the annual variation must not exceed 30% RH. This means a floor operating in a consistently air-conditioned environment — say, between 55% and 85% RH year-round — is within specification.

Here is the important detail: any indoor sports hall or cultural center in Indonesia serious enough to justify a quality floor already needs air conditioning for the comfort of athletes and audiences. That same air conditioning system controls the humidity variance to within Junckers' tolerance. The floor and the building's climate system are designed as a system together.

Junckers' 30% RH tolerance range is actually broader than many competitor engineered floors, which specify no more than a 20% annual range. A Junckers floor is more humidity-tolerant than most of what it's being compared to.

The press-drying process — which permanently reorganises the wood's internal structure — dramatically reduces the dimensional movement that tropical humidity would otherwise cause. Combined with the SylvaThene moisture barrier integrated into every installation, the tropical climate objection dissolves entirely when the building is properly managed.

The short answer: Junckers works in Indonesia. Indonesia Arena is the proof.

Strength, Durability, and the 60-Year Argument

This is where the economics of a Junckers floor become genuinely compelling.

A properly installed and maintained Junckers solid hardwood floor has a documented lifespan in excess of 60 years. The mechanism is simple: the floor can be sanded and refinished up to eight to ten times during its life. With sanding intervals of approximately every 12 years under normal use, the mathematics produce a floor that outlasts almost every other element of the building it's installed in.

The durability comparison with engineered flooring is striking. Independent testing shows that a Junckers sports floor, after two sandings, has more structural strength than an equivalent engineered floor that has never been sanded. This is because engineered boards are built from multiple pieces of wood bonded with glue. Over time — particularly under the repetitive dynamic loads of a sports environment — those internal glue joints can fail. A solid hardwood floor has no such failure points. It is homogeneous wood throughout.

A solid Junckers floor has a lifespan approximately four times that of an engineered wood floor. Across a 60-year horizon, that means one procurement decision versus four, four fewer installations, four fewer disruptions, four fewer rounds of specification risk, four fewer opportunities for substandard product to enter the building.

The upfront cost comparison looks very different when viewed through this lens. The floor that appears expensive on day one is frequently the cheapest floor over the life of the building.

For Luxury Residences: A Different Kind of Value

Junckers is not exclusively a sports product. The same solid hardwood systems — available in beech, ash, and oak, in a range of finishes from ultra-matte lacquer to natural oil — are appropriate for: luxury homes, high-end apartments, and boutique property developments.

The cost of remediation — ripping out a failed floor, preparing the subbase correctly, and reinstalling — almost always exceeds what would have been saved by specifying correctly at the beginning.
