The Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory was built by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia starting in 1964, on the idea of ​​President Soekarno with the hope that the Indonesian people gradually became acquainted with various celestial bodies and various events in outer space. In addition to funds from the government, the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory were also funded by the Indonesian Batik Cooperative Association.
In 1968, the building and planetarium equipment were successfully completed. On November 10 of the same year, the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory was inaugurated by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Ali Sadikin along with the inauguration of the Jakarta Arts Center—Taman Ismail Marzuki. The Planetarium show opened to the public on March 1, 1969, using a Universal projector made by Carl Zeiss, Germany. March 1 was later made the birthday of the Planetarium.
PLANETARIUM RENOVATION
Since 2019, Planetarium has been included in the renovation and revitalization plan for the Taman Ismail Marzuki area which is still ongoing today. The planetarium will become a more modern space observatory area. All the facilities will be completely overhauled, including the planetarium cinema room which is one of the attractive rides in this building. Using the latest technology and also more comfortable seats, it is hoped that the Jakarta Planetarium and the Taman Ismail Marzuki area will generally become the main places for tourism that is full of education and entertainment for the people of Jakarta.
