Types of FIBA Approved Basketball Court

In this article, we will explain the types of flooring used for basketball. Following FIBA standards, the basketball court has a size of 28 x 15 meters, and is divided into 3 levels based on the needs of the competition:

  • FIBA Level 1, is used for the main FIBA competitions which are equivalent to the Olympics and at the international level.
  • Then there is FIBA Level 2, which can be used for other FIBA competitions, or equivalent to the national level.
  • While the FIBA Level 3 Field can be used for matches between schools or clubs.

There are 3 types of basketball flooring that we recommend for you, and most are used for competitions.

INTERLOCK SYSTEM

The first, Interlock Basketball Floor. This floor is shaped like a puzzle and is usually made of polypropylene or PP. This Interlock floor usually has FIBA Level 2 and 3 qualifications, making it suitable for training fields to national level competitions. The advantage of the interlock system is that it is easy to install and can be portable so that the field is easy to disassemble, and can be installed indoor or outdoor.

PU SYSTEM

Second, we recommend a basketball floor with a PU aka Polyurethane coating. This type of flooring can fit into levels 2 and 3 of the FIBA standard.

Our flagship product for PU flooring is Herculan MF with a thickness of 7+2, because it has good ball bouncing for basketball. 7+2 thickness has good ball bounce for basketball. This floor is permanent and seamless, and can be used for other sports competitions. We recommend installing this floor on flat concrete. Herculan MF consists of several layers, starting from a rubber mat, pore filler, self-leveling, and a PU or Polyurethane layer as a top coat.

WOOD FLOORING

Lastly is the floor that we always recommend for professional basketball courts, namely sports wood flooring. Sports wood flooring can be classified as either FIBA Level 1 or FIBA Level 2, based on the FIBA certification scoring system.

Usually the types of wood used are maple, oak and beech. This floor system is divided into two, namely permanent and portable.

For a permanent floor, we recommend the Unobat 45 product from Junckers which has been tested for quality in various international basketball events.

Originating from Denmark, this product has received FIBA Level 1 certification with a sprung floor system which is another word for a floor that can absorb the effects of falling from players.

Unobat 45 has a system with a total thickness of 45 mm and uses 22mm thick solid hardwood on the surface. With a shock absorption rate of 60%, and a ball bounce rate of 95%, this floor meets EN 14904:A4 standards. Ball bounce rate of 95% according to standard EN 14904:A4

As for the interlock parquet system, we use Speed Lock S20. With a total system thickness of 37 mm, this floor consists of 3 layers, namely 3.6 mm Top Layer, 15 mm Middle Layer and 18 mm bottom layer. This floor is easy to install and can be disassembled easily.
