The New Normal: Adaptation to Waiting Areas for Different Modes of Transportation
Public Space & Playground
June 5, 2020

Public transportation is one of the economy’s sector that has been significantly impacted by the pandemic COVID 19. All types of transportation: land, water, and air has been imposed strict number of passengers and other regulations such as social distancing to prevent further spread of this contagious virus.
This change has certainly brought on changes and adjustments for passengers and transport carriers in areas such as their waiting rooms. Here we highlight some of the changes that we hope to see to help minimise the spread of the virus.
Examples of high traffic/high occupancy waiting rooms in airports, seaports, rail terminals and other major stations.

In high traffic waiting rooms many changes can be implemented to help prevent the spread of the virus and ensure safety of the passengers. Social distancing can be done with a revised seating configuration whereby the usual 5 seaters is changed to 3 seaters and 2 tables using our waiting chairs (no.1). In addition, hand sanitisers and/or hand washing station (no.2) is provided for passengers’ use.
Checking passenger’s temperature will also have to be monitored closely. The usual placement of metal detector gate can be changed to a temperature and metal detector gate such as our Datra Walk Through Metal Detector & Thermal Gate (no.3). In addition, passengers will be requested to enter a disinfectant box to kill all virus that is on the passenger’s clothes and carry on items.
Medium occupancy waiting areas such as the rail station commuter lines

In waiting rooms with medium occupancy such as the rail station commuter lines, the New Normal adjustments can also be implemented by distancing between chairs with a minimum of 50-60cm (no.1) and providing hand sanitisers for passengers’ use (no.2). Since temperature checking is still a crucial part to preventing the spread of the virus, using a metal and temperature detector gate such as Datra Walk Through Metal Detector & Thermal Gate (no.3) will help to cut down the processing time of temperature checking than a handheld digital thermometer. This will surely ease passengers to catch their train during rush hour.
Smaller occupancy waiting rooms (bus terminals)

In smaller spaces such as transjakarta bus terminals, it is important to maximise the space by using Tripod Turnstile for gate tapping as well as Facial Recognition & Thermal Access Control to quickly check on passengers’ temperature without delay. In addition, where there are waiting chairs provided, distance between 50-60cm should be maintained to minimise physical contact between passengers.
Routine schedule for disinfectant treatment
For further precaution, regular disinfectant treatment should be scheduled to permanently kill the virus that is lingering in these waiting areas. PT Strategic Pest Control recommends a routine treatment 2x a week. Their vast experience as an integrated facility management is proven in many renowned buildings, industrial and commercial facilities.
